North Korea nuclear program

Editor's note: The news that North Korea has shared plans to launch a satellite this month does not come as a surprise, as U.S. and Japanese sources said last week that some sort of preparations had been detected. Whether the secretive nation is truly planning a scientific space launch is less certain. In 2012, North Korea sent up a satellite which many observers thought was cover for a ballistic missile launch. Kim Jong Un claims Pyongyang conducted its first successful test launch of a hydrogen bomb last month, and has called for further strengthening of its nuclear program. A South Korean defense ministry spokesperson recently noted to the AFP the North usually sends up a ballistic missile ahead of a nuclear test, and so perhaps this time it is playing out events in reverse. - Tricia
