Moammar Gadhafi was killed Oct. 20, 2011, when revolutionary forces overwhelmed his hometown, Sirte, two months after his regime fell. On July 7, 2012, Libyans voted in the first free national election in 60 years, a key milestone in a nine-month transition toward democracy for the country after the bitter civil war that ended Gadhafi's four-decade-long rule.
