Two major earthquakes hit northern Italy in May 2012. The 1st one rocked a large swathe of the region early on May 20, killing at least 5 people, injuring dozens and seriously damaging historic churches, bell towers and a medieval castle. A series of aftershocks followed the quake. On May 29, a new earthquake at magnitude 5.8, struck the Emilia region, killing at least 15.
