On March 23, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI began his three-day visit to Mexico in the central city of Leon with a festive welcome from President Felipe Calderon after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about Mexico's spiraling drug war.

The pope heads to Cuba on March 26, in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy. Communism, he said, no longer works in Cuba. - Reuters
